Doesn't Your Cup Deserve a Quilt, Too?

Doesn't Your Cup Deserve a Quilt, Too?

Today I'm doing a surprise pattern release, but it isn't a regular quilt pattern. This is a pattern for a tiny quilt specifically designed to wrap around your favorite to-go coffee cup just in time for PSL Season (that is, Pumpkin Spice Latte Season to the uninitiated).  I call them Coffee Corsets, and once you make one you'll want to make a dozen or, in my case, you'll want to make thousands.  They also work great on cups for other types of to-go drinks as well as on pint glasses or really any type of cup or glass that is smaller at the bottom and larger at the top.

A Brief History of the Coffee Corset

It was 2007 and I’d just heard about this new website called Etsy where people were selling handmade goods. I wanted in on the action! I opened an online shop and started selling bags, small quilts, and – most notably – the original Coffee Corset (a quilted and ribbon-laced fabric cuff to replace the boring cardboard sleeves that come with to-go coffee cups). I designed the Coffee Corset through lots of trial and error with an eye toward making a really great looking final product in a really neat and efficient way. Between 2007 and 2014 I made and sold thousands of Coffee Corsets! The demand for them still existed at that point, but after making so many Coffee Corsets my desire to keep making them had waned. I moved on to other things. Since then I’ve taught a few Coffee Corset workshops, but I’ve never sold the pattern – until now!

Why Make Coffee Corsets?

Coffee Corsets are great gifts because they can be customized to suit the recipient, the supplies are relatively inexpensive and easy to source, and they can be made quickly and easily. They also sell well at craft fairs, handmade markets, and, of course, Etsy!

I wrote this pattern to be as similar to a hands-on workshop as possible. It includes lots of hints, tips, graphics, and levels of detail that are probably unnecessary. It is exactly the type of pattern I would want to have if I were making a Coffee Corset for the first time!

Side note: I encourage you to use this pattern to make items to sell if that is something you are interested in doing, but I’d appreciate a mention of my name (Jenn George Burt) and/or website (jenngeorgeburt.com) as the pattern source if you do. Thanks for supporting my small business!
